1️⃣ What You Need Before You Start
Before opening a GoCardless account, gather the following information.
This helps avoid delays during onboarding.
✔ Organisation Details
- Official club/organisation name
- Organisation address
- Contact email and phone number
✔ Bank Account Details
GoCardless will collect payments and pay them into your organisation’s bank account.
You will need:
- Account holder name
- Sort code / routing number
- Account number or IBAN
Tip: The bank account should belong to the organisation, not to an individual.
✔ Responsible Person (Verification)
GoCardless must verify one individual associated with the organisation (e.g. treasurer or chairperson).
You will need:
- Full name
- Home address
- Date of birth
- Photo ID (passport or driving licence)
Why GoCardless asks for personal ID
Financial regulations require GoCardless to verify one real person connected to the organisation
(KYC — Know Your Customer).
2️⃣ Go to the GoCardless Signup Page
Visit the GoCardless signup page:

Why GoCardless?
GoCardless enables secure Direct Debit payments, ideal for recurring collections, instalment plans, and memberships.
3️⃣ Choosing the Correct Organisation Type (Important)
During signup, GoCardless will ask you to select the type of organisation you are setting up.
Choosing the closest match helps avoid delays during verification.
✔ Most clubs should select:
- Non-profit / Charity (if available)
- Organisation / Business (if no specific club option is shown)
These typically apply to:
- Sports clubs
- Youth organisations
- Community groups
- Volunteer-run clubs
- Charities
⚠️ Important notes
- Some clubs may not see an option labelled “Unincorporated Association”
- If your club is not a registered limited company, do not provide company registration details
- GoCardless may request additional information later to confirm your organisation type
If you are unsure, select the closest match and continue — GoCardless will clarify during verification if needed.

6️⃣ Common Mistakes to Avoid
❌ Selecting the wrong organisation type
This can trigger requests for documents you may not have.
❌ Using a personal bank account
GoCardless expects an organisation-owned bank account for compliance.
❌ Uploading unclear ID
Blurry or incomplete documents can delay approval.
❌ Using inconsistent organisation details
Names and addresses should be entered consistently throughout setup.
